CAVITY


1.                  CAVITY[1]: N/OR – Kòròfo

-          Ihò tàbí àyè tí ó wà nínú nǹkan. A hole or empty space inside something solid

-          Ihò tí ó wà nínú eyín. A hole in a tooth (káà)

2.                  CELL: N/OR – Ẹ̀wọ̀n, Túbú, Àhámọ́

-          Yàrá tí ó wà nínú ọgbà ẹ̀wọ̀n tàbí àgọ́ ọlọ́pàá tí kò le gbà ju ènìyàn kan sí méjì lọ. A room for one or more prisoners in a prison or police station

-          Yàrá kéreké tí kò ní ohun ọ̀ṣọ́ ilé púpô tí àwọn òjíṣẹ́ Ọlórun kan tí a ń pè ní nọ́ọ̀nù tàbí mọ́ǹkì ń gbé. A small room without much furniture in which a monk or nun lives.

-          Ohun ìwọ̀n tí ó kéré jùlọ lára nǹkan ẹlẹ́mìí tí ó lè dá wà. The smallest unit of living matter that can exist on its own

-          Gbogbo ẹranko àti ohun ọ̀gbìn ló ní sẹ́ẹ̀lì. All plants and animals are made up of cells.

-          Àkójọpọ̀ ìwôn kékeré tí a fi ṣẹ̀dá ìhun ńla kan. Fún àpẹ̀ẹ̀rẹ, afárá oyin. Each of the small sections that together form a larger structure, for example a honey comb.

-          Ohun èlò tí a fi ń pèsè ìtàná. Fún àpẹẹrẹ láti ara ohún tí ó wá láati ara kẹ́míkà tàbí iná. A device for producing an electric current, for example by the action of chemicals or light.

-          Ọ̀wọ́ ènìyàn tó wà lábẹ́ ẹgbẹ́ kan ní pàtàkì àwọn akòwé tàbí àwọn oní sùnmọ̀mí. A group of people who work as a part of a larger political organisation, especially secretary; a terrorist cell.

-          Ôkan lára àwọ̀n ìwé pẹlẹbẹ onígun mẹ́rin tí ó dọ́gbà tí àwọn oní kọ̀ǹpùtà máa ǹ kọ data kan sí.. One of the small squares in a spreadsheet computer program in which you enter a single piece of data.

-          Èrọ fóònù alágbèéká. Cell phone

-          Ṣé o lè fún mi ní nọ́ńbà fóònù alágbèéká rẹ? Can I have your cell phone number?

3.                  CEREMONY: Ayẹyẹ (N/OR)

-                      Àgbékalẹ̀ ayẹyẹ tí ó jẹ mó ẹ̀sìn tàbí tí ó jẹ́ ti mùtúmùwà nínú èyí tí a ti máa ń rí àṣà àti ìṣẹ̀ṣe. A public or religious occasion that includes a series of formal or traditional actions.

-          Ayẹyẹ ṣíṣe tàbí ìwúrí. An awards happening ceremony. Ibi ayẹyẹ tí a ti ń fún ni ní ẹ̀bùn.

-          Ayẹyẹ ìgbéyàwó. A wedding/marriage ceremony

-          Ṣé o máa lọ sí ibi ayẹye náà? Would you be going for the ceremony?

-          Àwọn ohun tí ó ń ṣẹlẹ̀ nínú ìṣẹṣe tàbí ọ̀rọ̀ tí a lò níbi àpéjọpọ̀ àìgbagbẹ̀fẹ́ kan. Traditional actions and words used on particular formal occasions.

-          Ìdúró tàbí ìrísí ibi ayẹyẹ. Stand on ceremony.

-          Láìsí ayẹyẹ. Without ceremony

-          Ó rí i pé wọ́n ti òun jade láìbuyì fún òun wọ́n sì pa ìlẹ̀kùn dé mọ́ òun gbàà. He found himself pushed without ceremony out of the house and the door slammed in his face.

4.                  CERTIFICATE: N/OR/V/IṢ - Ìwé ẹ̀rí

-          Ìwé gbogbogbòò tí a lè fi ṣẹ̀rí òtítọ́. An official document that may be used to prove that the facts it states are true.

-          Ìwé-ẹ̀rí ìbímọ́/ìgbéyàwó/ikú. Birth/marriage/death certificate

-          Ìwé gbogbogbòò tí a lè fi ṣẹ̀rí pé à ti parí ẹ̀kọ́ tàbí pé a ti yege nínú ìdánwò tàbí iṣẹ́ kan. An official document proving that you have completed a course of study or passed an exam; a qualification obtained after a course of study or an exam.

5.                  CHAIR: N/OR – ìjókòó, alága, àga

-          Ohun ìjókòó fún ènìyàn láti jókòó, tí ó ní ẹ̀yìn, àti ẹsè mẹ́rin. A piece of furniture for one person to sit on, with a back, a seat and four legs.

-          Tábìlì àti àga. A table and chairs

-          Jókòó lórí àga rẹ. Sit on your chair

-          Ipò adarí ìpàdé kan. The person who chairs a meeting.

-          Òun ló máa ń ṣe adarí/alága gbogbo ìpàdé wa. She takes the chair in all our meetings.

-          Wọ́n yàn án ní alága àjọ ìlú. He was elected chair of the city council.

-          Ipò adarí ẹ̀ka-ẹ̀kó ní Yunifásítì. The position of being in charge of a department in a university.

-          The electric chair. Àga oníná

-          Ṣíṣe alága ìpàdé kan. To act as the chairman or chairwoman of a meeting discussion etc.

-          Ta ni alága ìpàdé? Who’s chairing the meeting?

6.                  CHARACTER: (N/OR) Ìṣesí/Ìhùwàsí/Ìwà

-          Àwọn àbùdá tí a lè rí tóka sí tí ó mú nǹkan kan yàtọ̀ sí òmíràn. All the qualities and features that make a person, groups of people and places different from others.

-          Ìní ìhùwàsí tò dáńtọ́ tàbí tí ò kù díẹ̀ káà tó. To have strong/weak character

-          Eléyìí fún wa ní ìwòye sí ìhùwàsí ìyáwó Òbámà. This gives a fascinating insight into Mrs Obama’s character.

-          Ìwà Tọ́lá ò tíì yàtọ̀. The character of Tola hasn’t changed at all.

-          Ìrísí nǹkan. The way that something is, or a particular quality or feature that a thing, an event or a place has.

-          Àwọn àbùdá tí a rí mọ́ ẹni kan ní pàtàkì láti kojú ohun tí ó le. Strong personal qualities such as the ability to deal with difficult or dangerous situations.

-          Ó fi àbùdá tó yanrantí hàn láti padà láti tún máa ṣe eré ìdárayá lẹ́yìn ìjàǹbá tí ó ní. She showed great character returning to sport after her accident.

-          Àbùdá ọ̀tun tàbí èyí tí ó ṣàjèjì tí nǹkan tàbí ènìyàn ní. The interesting or unusual quality that a place or a person has.

-          Ènìyàn kan, pàápàá jùlọ, ẹni tí ó ṣàjèjì. A person, particularly an unpleasant or strange one.

-          Àwọn àjèjì ẹ̀dá wà ní àyíká ibùgbé náà. There were some really strange characters hanging around the hostel.

-          Ẹni tí ìhùwàsí rẹ̀ dára yàtô tàbí tí irú rẹ kò wọpô. An interesting or unusual person.

-          Ẹ̀dá ni Bọlá o! Bola is a character!

-          Èròǹgbà àwọn ènìyàn nípa rẹ ní pàtàkì nípa pé bóyá o ṣeé gbẹ́kẹ̀lé. The opinion that people have of you, particularly of whether you can be trusted or relied on.

-          Wọn parọ ìwà mọ́ Bọ́lá. Bola was a victim of character assassination (i.e. an unfair attack on the good opinion people had of her).

-          Tọ́la gbà láti ṣ ẹlẹ́rìírìí bí ìwà mi ṣe rí ní ilé ẹjọ́. Tola agreed to be a character witness for me in court.

-          Ìtọ́ka Ìhùwàsí. A character reference

-          Ìwé tí ẹni tí ó mọ̀ ẹ́ dáadáa kọ sí àwọn ẹni tí ó gbà ọ́ ṣíṣẹ́ láti sọ nípa ìwà rẹ tí ó dára. A letter that a person who knows you well writes to an employer to tell them about your good qualities.

-          Ènìyàn tàbí ẹranko  ínú ìwé tàbí eré oníṣe, fíìmù tàbí sinimá. A person or an animal in a book, play or film/movie.

-          Bọlá ni olú-ẹ̀dá ìtàn fíìmù náà. Bola was the main/major character in the movie.

-          Àwọn àmì, lẹ́tà tàbí máàkì  tí a máa ń lò fún kíkó nǹkan sílẹ̀, fún títẹ nǹkan tàbí nínú kọ̀ǹpútà. A letter, sign, mark or symbol used in writing, printing, or computers.

-          Ìwà tí Tóbi wù lálẹ́ àná kò jọ bí o ti máa ń wùwà. Tobi’s behaviour last night was completely out of character.

-          Níní ìwà kan náà pẹ̀lú nǹkan kan. Níní sítáì kan náà pẹ̀lú nǹkan kan. In character with something; in the same style as something.


7.                  CHARGE: N/OR/V/IṢ – Gba agbára/Fèsunkan ènìyàn/Ìdíyelé

-          Owó: iye tí ènìyàn gbé lé ọjà

Money: The amount of money that somebody asks for goods and services

-          Ọ̀fẹ́ ni ìfi nǹkan jísẹ. Delivery is free of charge

-          Ìfẹ̀sùnkanni láti ọ̀dọ̀ àwọn ọ́lọ́pàá pé ẹnikan dáràn. Ẹ̀sùn ọ̀daràn. An official claim made by the police that somebody has committed a crime; criminal charges.

-          Sọlá ti pinnu láti fẹ̀sùn kan ilé-iṣẹ́ náà ní ilé-ẹjọ́.. Sola has decided to put up charges against the company in court.

-          Ìwé tí a kọ láti sọ pé ẹni kan ṣe ohun tí kò dára; Ifêsùnkanni. A statement accusing somebody of doing something wrong or bad; allegation.

-          Ipò ìjẹgàba lórí nǹkan. A position of having control over something /somebody; responsibility for somebody/something.

-          Wọ́n fi ṣe olùbójútó ètò owó ilé-iṣẹ́ náà. I was left in charge of the company’s finances.

-          Ìwọ̀n iná tí ó wà nínú bátìrì. The amount of electricity that is put into a battery or carried by a substance; positive or negative charge.

-          Ọ̀kan lára ọ̀nà ìbánijà tí ó yá gan-an, bá àpẹẹrẹ, bíi ti àwọn ológun. A sudden rush or violent attack, for example by soldiers.

8.                  CHILD: (N/OR) – Qmọ

-          Ènìyàn kékeré tí kò tíì di ọ̀dọ́; ọmọ ọdún mẹ́ta. A young human who is not yet an adult; a child of three/a three year old child.

-          Qkùnrin tàbí obìnrin iye ọmọ ọdún yòówú tí ó jẹ́. A son or daughter of any age

-          Àwọn Olásùpọ̀ ní awọn ọmọ tí ó ti dàgbà mẹ́ta. The Olasupo’s have three grown-up children.

-          Ẹni tí ó jẹ́ pé ìhùwàsí ìgbà kan tàbí ti ẹni kan ni ó máa ń darí rẹ̀ gan-an. A person who is strongly influenced by the ideas and attitudes of a particular time or person.

9.                  CHIMNEY: (N/OR) – simini/iho efin

-          Ibi tí èéfín ti máa å jáde lára iná tí ó sì ń bá òrùlé ilé jáde. A structure through which smoke or steam is carried up away from a fire, etc. and through the roof of a building; the part of this that is above the roof.

-          Ó ju ìwé pélébé sí inú iná ó sì gba ibi tí èéfi máa ń gbà jáde. He threw a bit of paper unto the fire and it flew up the chimney.

10.              CHINA: (N/OR) – Zaina

-          Amọ̀ funfun tí wọ́n sun tí wọ́n fi ń ṣe ife ẹlẹgẹ́ tàbí àwo. White clay which is baked and used for making delicate cups, plates etc.

-          Ìkòkò amô. A China vase

-          Ife, abọ́ tí a fi amọ̀ ṣe. Cups, plates that are made of China
