Wait



Wait[1] (v/IṢ) dúró. To stay where you are or delay doing something until somebody or something happens. To stop something temporarily. (Kí ènàiyàn dúró ní ibi tí ó wà tàbí kí ó dá nǹkan dúró títí tí nǹkan kan yóò fi ṣẹ̣) Wait for me (Dúró dè mí).

Wake (v/Iṣ) jí: To stop sleeping. (Kí a má sùn mọ́). What time do you usually wake up in the morning? (Ní àsìkò won i o máa ń jí ní àárọ̀?

Walk (v/IṢ) rìn. To move or go somewhere by putting one foot in front of the other on ground but without running. Kí ènìyàn tàbí nǹkan lọ sí ibi kan nípa gbígbé ẹsẹ̀ kan sí iwájú tí èkèjì sì tẹ̀ lé e láì jẹ́ pé a ń sárẹ́. The baby is just learning how to walk. Ọmọ kékeré jòjòló náà ṣẹ̀ṣẹ̀ ń kọ́ bí a ṣe ń rìn ni.

Want (v/IṢ) fẹ́: To have a wish or desire for something. (Kí ènìyàn ní ìfẹ́ sí nǹkan). Do you want to help me? (Ṣé o fẹ́ ràn mí lọ́wọ́ ni?)

Warm (v/IṢ) lọ́ wọ́órọ́: Ata a fairly high temperature in a way that is pleasant, rather than being hot or cold. (Kí nǹkan gbóná díẹ̀ ní ọ̀nà tí ó tuni lára. Tí kò gbóná tí kò tutu). The children jumped up and down to keep warm (Àwọn ọmọdé náà ń fò sókè sódò kí òtútù má bàa mú wọn.

Wash (v/IṢ) fọ̀: To make something clean using water and usually soap. (Kí á mú kí nǹkan mọ́ nípa lílo omi; nígbà mìíràn, nípa lílo omi àti ọsẹ) Wash the fruit thoroughly before eating it (Fọ èso náà dáadáa kí o tó jẹ ẹ́).

Waste (v/IṢ) si ṣòfò: To use more of something than is necessary. (Kí á lò ju èyí tí a nílò nínú nǹkan kan lọ). Don’t waste your money. (Má fi owó rẹ ṣòfò).

Watch (v/IṢ) sọ́: To look at something or somebody for a time. Paying attention to what happens (Wíwo nǹkan fún ìgbà kan. Ṣíṣe àkíyèsí ohun tí ó ń ṣẹlẹ̀). Could you help me watch my bags while I buy some oranges? (Ṣé o lè bá mi sọ́ àwọn báàgi wọ̀nyí kí n fi ọsàn díẹ̀). (ii) To be looking carefully for something or somebody that you expect to see especially in order to avoid possible danger (Kí a máa fi sùúrù sọ ẹni kàn tàbí ohun kan tí a fẹ́ rí ní pàtàkì nítorí ewu tí ó lè ṣẹlẹ̀). (iii) To protect something or somebody. (Kí a dábò bo nǹkan tàbí ẹni kan). Watch your bags. Thieves are around. (Mójú tó báàgi rẹ. Àwọn olè wà nítòsí).

Water (n/OR) omi: A liquid without colour, smell or taste that falls as rain, is in lake, rivers and seas and is used for drinking and washing. (Omi kìí rùn kò sì ní àwọ. Òhun ni a máa ń rí nínú òkun tàbí ọ̀sà. Òhun ni a ń mu tí a si fi ń fọṣọ). She fell into the water. (Ó subú sí inú omi).

Way (n/OR) ọ̀nà: A method, style, manner of doing something. (Ọ̀nà ìgbà ṣe nǹkan). I hate the way she always criticize me. (Ọ̀nà tí ó máa ń gbà takò mí kò tẹ́ mi lọ́rùn).
