COUGH

COUGH[1]

 Verb (òrò-ìse) wúkó, to force out air suddenly and noisily through your throat when you have cold. Láti fi ipá fọn atégùn jáde lójijì láti ònà òfun. I am coughing. Mo ń wúkó.

Noun (òrò-orúko) ikó tàbí ikọ́ọ-fée, an illness or infection that makes you cough often. Aìsàn tàbí ìrànmó tí ó máa ń mú o wúkó nígbàkùùgbà. My cold is better, but can’t seem to shake off this cough. Òtútù mi ti san díè sùgbón ó dà bí eni pé mi ò ti le gbòn ikó yi kúrò.

COUNTRY

Noun (òrò-orúko) ilẹ̀, an area of land that has or used to have its own government and laws. Ilè tí a pàlà sí èyí tí ó ní ìjọba àti òfin tàbí tí ó ti máa ń ní ìjọba àti òfin ti rè. It is good to meet people from different part of the country. Ó jé oun tí ó dára láti pàdé ènìyàn láti oríṣiríṣ èyà ilè tí ó yàtò tí ó yàtọ̀ sí ara.

Ìlú, The people of a country, the nation as a whole.Àwon ènìyàn ìlú, àwon orílè-èdè ní odidi. They have the support of most of the country. Wón ní àtìléyìn ti àwọn tí ó pọ̀ jù lára àwọn ará ilu.

COVER

Noun (òrò-orúko) àabò, A thing that is put over or on another thing, usually to protect it. nǹkan tí a fi sí orí nǹkan mìíràn tàbí tí ó wa ní orí ǹkan mìíràn ní pàtàkì láti dáàbò bò ó . Cushion cover -  àabò tí a fi bo timutimu.

Ìbora, The sheet on a bed .Aso ìbora orí ìbùsùn. She threw back the covers and leapt out of bed. Ó ju aso ìbora náà sẹ́yìn ó sì fò jáde láti orí ìbùsùn.

Verb (òrò-ìse) bo, To place something over or in front of something in order to hide or protect it. Láti fi nǹkan síbì kan lórí tàbí ní iwájú nǹkan lọ́nà láti  fi i pamó tàbí tàbí láti dáàbò bò ó. She covered her face with her hands. Ó fi ọwó. bo ojú rẹ̀.

COW

Verb (òrò-ìse) Dérù bà, To frighten somebody in order to make them obey you. Láti dérù bà ènìyàn  láti jé kíón terí ba fún un. She was easily cowed by her mother. Ìrọ̀rùn ni ìyá rẹ̀ fi dẹ́rù bà á.

Noun (òrò-orúko) Mààlúù, A large animal kept on farms to produce milk or beef. Eran ńlá kan tí ań tójú ní oko tí a lè rí wàrà tàbí tí a lè jẹ ẹran rẹ̀. Cow’s milk. Wàrà abo màlúù.

CRACK

Noun (òrò-orúko) Ìlá, A line on the surface of something where it has broken but not split into separate parts. Ìlà kan tí o wa lára nkan nìbi tì ó tì fọ́ sùgbón tí kò là sí ipa òtòtò. Cracks began to appear in the walls. Ìlà beresi ní fara hàn ní ara ògiri náà ògiri naà bẹ̀rẹ̀ síí sán.

(Sisan) A narrow space or opening. Àlàfo tàbí ìsínu tooro kan. She peeped through the crack in the door. Ó yojú láti ibi tí ó sán lára  ilèkùn náà.

Verb (òrò-ìse) Sán, To break something without dividing into separate parts. Láti fọ́ nǹkan láì pín in sí òtoòtoò. He has cracked a bone in his arm. Ó ti jẹ́ kí eegun apá rè kan sán.

CREDIT

Verb (òrò-ìse) Fi kún, To add an amount of money to somebody’s bank account. Kí a fi kún iye owó kan tí ènìyàn kan ní nílé ìfi owó pamó sí. My bank account has been credited. Wón ti fi kún owó tí mo ní nínú àkáǹtì mi ní báǹkì.

Noun (òrò-orúko) Àwìn, an arrangement that you make with a shop to pay later for something you buy. Ètò tí ó se pèlú ilé ojà kan láti san owó fún nǹkan léyìn ìgbà tí a rà á tán. We bought the dish washer on credit. Àwìn ni a ra èro ìfo àwò náà.

Ìyìn, Praise or approval because you are responsible for something good that has happened. Ìyìn tàbí ìfowọ́sí tí o gbà nítorí pé ìwọ ni o ṣe okùnfà ohun rere tí ó ṣẹlẹ̀. We did all the work and she gets all the credit. A jo se gbogbo isé náà ni sùgbón ohun ni ó gba gbogbo oríyìn rè.

CRIME

Noun (òrò-orúko) Riru ofin, Activities that involve breaking the law. Ṣise ohun tí ó lodi si ofin. An increase in violent crime. Pípọ̀ si i àwọn ẹ̀ṣẹ̀ tí ó lòdì sí òfin.

Iwa buburu, An act that you think is immoral or is a big mistake. Ohun kan tí o rò pé ó burú tàbí tí ó jẹ́ àṣiṣe ńlá. It is a crime to waste so much money. Ìwà búbrú ni láti máa fi owó tí ó pọ̀ sòfùn.

CRUEL

Adjective (oro-apejuwe) Níkà, Having a desire to cause pain and suffering. Níní ìfé láti dá ìròra ati ìjìyà sílè. Her eyes were cruel and hard. Ojú rè le ó sì níkà.

CRUSH

Noun (òrò-orúko) Ìfúnpa, A crowd of people pressed close together in a small space. Opo eniyan ti won fun mora níbi tí àyè rẹ̀ kéré.. A big crush in the theatre bar. Ifunpa nla nibi ìwá nǹkan mu nínú tíátà. .

Verb (òrò-ìse) Rún, To press or squeeze something so hard that it is damaged or injured or loses it shape. Lati fun nǹkan le tabi láti fun nǹkan po débi tí yóò fi baje tabi kí ó ní ìpalára tabi kí ó pàdánù ìrísí rẹ̀. The car was completely crushed under the truck. Káà náà rún pátápátá lábẹ́ ọkọ̀ akóyọyọ náà.

Fún pa, To push or press somebody or something into a small space. Láti fún nǹkan kan mọ́ra nínú àyè tí kò fẹjú. Over twenty people were crushed into a small room. Áo lé ní ogún ènìyàn tí fún mọ́ra sínú yàrá kékeré náà..

CRY

Verb (òrò-ìse) Sọkún, To produce tears from your eyes because you are unhappy or hurt.Láti ṣe omijé láti inú ojú nítorí ẹni náà ní ìpàlára tàbí pé inú rẹ̀ kò dùn. The baby was crying for her mother. Omo náà ń sokún fún ìyá ré.

Kígbe, To shout loudly. Láti pariwo kíkankíkan. Tom cried in delight. Tom kígbe ayò

Noun (òrò-orúko) Igbe, A loud sound without word that expresses a strong feeling. Ariwo tí a pa láìsọ ọ̀rò láti fi ìmọ̀lára tí ó ga hàn. She gave a cry of anguish. Ó kígbe ìrora.

The sound made by a bird or an animal. Ìró tí ẹranko tàbí ẹyẹ máa ń gbé jade..
